CaSSECS, a DESiRA project

Last update: 9 November 2021

CaSSECS is a research and development project supporting innovation for the resilience of pastoral and agropastoral livestock in the Sahelian countries of the CILSS. It is implemented through a consortium of eighteen partners (one principal applicant ISRA, nine co-applicants and eight associates).

Project objectives

The overall objective of the project is to improve the assessment of the carbon balance of (agro)pastoral livestock systems in order to better quantify their impacts on climate change and to develop livestock policies adapted to the Sahel.

More specifically, the aim is to

  •     producing knowledge and reference systems on GHG emission and carbon sequestration factors
  •     developing multi-scale carbon assessment tools and systems
  •     co-designing sustainable mitigation options with agro-pastoralists.

The project will rely on existing measurement tools such as observation sites with historical data from the PPZS (Pôle Pastoralisme et Zones Sèches) partnership and assessment tools such as the GLEAM (Global Livestock Environmental Assessment Model).

The actors involved in the project

The CaSSECS project is based on a multi-actor approach consisting of

  •     target groups: government and NGO technical officers, researchers and teacher-researchers from research and higher education institutions, pastoralists and (agro)pastoralists.
  •     Final beneficiaries: pastoral and agro-pastoral households in the intervention area.
